Masala, is a word of Indian origin, meaning mixtures of spices. There are different kinds of masala out there with different combos; the most common type is called “Garam masala.” The term “garam masala” means “mixtures of hot spices”

It is generally a combination of ground cumin seeds, coriander seeds, cardamom, cloves, black pepper, cinnamon and bay leaves. The term “masala” is commonly used to mean many things; when used in a slang fashion, it may connote “an interesting mixtures of things” Every house and region has its own version of the “masala” and many profess it the greatest secret handed down from generation to generation.

For instance, in Bollywood movies “masala movies” refers a movie with elements of a Bond formula, comedy, romance, a villain, hero & beautiful heroine!

Masala is thus and all-purpose word with multiple context-sensitive nuances in meaning.
