Early History Of African American Inventors
An impressive collection of 101 black inventors. Including inventors ranging from ice cream spoons to pens. Each inventor has a concise, to-the-point summary of their life and discoveries plus great illustrations of the inventors. This is a great book to keep on your coffee table because anyone can pick it up and read a page without having to read the whole thing to learn something new. The writing is larger, which is personally a big plus for me. I would recommend this book to anyone 10+ years old. The contributions made by the African Americans who shaped our society are as astonishing as their many. Benton Spirit News has compiled a list of important discoveries throughout history, and their inventors:
In 1896, farmers did not view peanuts as a cash crop, but sharecroppers had depleted their land growing cotton year after year. Carver knew that plants containing protein helped replenish the soil. He convinced farmers to alternate planting cotton with peanuts. Carver then discovered a way for farming families to incorporate beans into their diet. She devised peanut recipes for soups, cookies, candy and, of course, peanut butter. Carver encouraged farmers to use peanut oil and peanut milk for cooking. Roasted peanuts can be used to make coffee. Peanuts that have been boiled and mixed with eggs are used as a coating for sweet potatoes, which are then fried into imitation fried chicken.
Carver knew that farmers would benefit from using peanuts to feed their livestock as well as their families, and he produced several types of animal feed from peanuts. Peanut liver is a good feed for laying hens. The hulls will be used to make bran and flour. Peanut plants can be dried and made into straw. Carver also noted that pigs fed a diet of peanuts and corn produced high-quality ham and bacon.
Carver does not create new plants. He discovered ways to combine plants with other ingredients to produce useful products. In his laboratory at Tuskegee University, Carver experimented with several plants, such as sweet potatoes and soybeans, to create plant dyes. He manipulated peanut pigments to produce various dyes for fabric and leather. He also uses pea pigments to make wood stains, paints and inks.

Paper is made from fiber, and in most modern paper, the fiber used is wood fiber. Carver discovered that peanut plant fiber could be used to make various kinds of paper. He used the entire peanut plant, except the peanut itself, to make various types of paper. Peanut plant fiber is useful for making white paper, colored paper and newsprint. Kraft paper is produced using leather fiber or peanut shells. Peanut skin fibers are very thin
