Looking back I wish we had more time to properly explore the Amalfi Coast. But I know that staying there for a night or two will increase the cost significantly!

The first question on my mind was where to place ourselves. I used to debate between central Naples or Sorrento. which is a seaside city further south.

Sorrento has a geographic advantage. If you come to Naples You probably want to visit Pompeii. Vesuvius ship and the Amalfi Coast Sorrento is in the middle of these places. Getting to the airport can be more of a problem. But on the other hand Must-see sites are easily accessible by ferry or train. Circumvesuviana

Sorrento is a tourist town full of expats and middle-aged British couples. (Nothing against them It’s just a fact) There is absolutely no accuracy here. My feeling is that it is.

Naples, Positano, Amalfi Coast Tour

I’m glad I chose Naples – it’s chaotic, urban, lively and, yes, bold, but much cheaper. The food was great value. We’re talking about the best pizza in the world!! – and it is the greatest opportunity to truly immerse yourself in Italian culture.

No, this is not a memorable place. But it’s not Sorrento either. But on the other hand It’s very different to the real stars of the region: the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and Vesuvius, in my view. Naples is worth a stay just for that reason.

Just a 2-minute walk from the picturesque Toledo metro station, this B&B is perfect for a short stay in Naples. The travel-inspired decor is awesome! Book now

We’ve narrowed it down to visiting only Positano and Amalfi on a day trip to the Amalfi Coast. Feeling like a mother having to choose between her child? I would love to visit Praiano or Ravello, but wait. Quality over quantity!

Highlights Of Naples And The Amalfi Coast

The first city, Positano, is very charming, perhaps too touristy for some. The city feels like an open-air women’s clothing shopping center. But it has incredible beauty. The way the village covers the Monti Lattari mountain range and abruptly falls into the turquoise sea is very picturesque.

The pebble beach is crowded but the water is still clear. It’s close to the #1 place in the crystal clear sea I’ve ever swam: Zlatni Rat in Brac, Croatia.

Then instead take the next bus to Amalfi. We chose to take the ferry. Not only this allowed us to trek all the way to the station. But the trip itself was much more relaxing and beautiful. I recommend traveling by ferry at least once.

I find Amalfi even more luxurious than Positano. It has the same outdoor shopping center feel. But when I saw a group of tourists paying €30 (!) for three lemon granitas, I knew this was serious business.

The cathedral steals the show It is a welcome piece of architecture standing tall in the middle of a cobbled street.

The beach was a little dilapidated. While it’s not as nice as Positano’s, it’s really hard to find a place to lay out a towel on the beach. Amalfi is perhaps more impressive on the mountain side. But the city backdrop is amazing. It reminded me of the scenery in Dalmatia again!

There are 2 types of people in this world. Amalfi enthusiasts and Positano team enthusiasts I am the latter Both are touristy and somewhat pretentious. But in my eyes Positano has the advantage in terms of uniqueness.

However, Amalfi is very similar to Monterosso in the Cinque Terre. They also specialize in fancy organic cotton clothing and are very expensive for some reason.

Awesome Stops On Your Amalfi Coast Adventure

The final stop was the unimpressive Salerno. We only stayed for a couple of hours and the atmosphere is very touristy and has no special features.

Getting to the Amalfi Coast from Naples by public transport usually involves two legs. First, take the train to Sorrento using the line. Circumvesuviana The journey takes approximately 1 hour, or less if you take the Campania Express (see tips below).

The SITA bus station in Sorrento is located directly in front of the train station. The bus left 10 minutes after we arrived.

From Sorrento, the cheapest way to get to the Amalfi Coast is on a SITA Bus day trip. These buses run frequently (approximately every 40 minutes) and cover the entire coast from Sorrento to Salerno by stopping in large villages

There is also another bus line. It is a red hop-on hop-off bus from City Sightseeing. A day ticket costs 15 euros. However, these routes only travel from Sorrento to Amalfi/Ravello. To return to Naples You will need to travel back to Sorrento or take the ferry from Amalfi to Salerno.

Or you can take the ferry from Sorrento directly to Positano or Amalfi. There are more beautiful scenery. But ferries are less frequent.

Pompeii is one of those places that gives you that amazing feeling. “I am walking on history.” Highlights include access to ancient thermal baths and spas. and central forum area which is remarkable not only because of the ruins. but also from the scene of the crime.

Pompeii’s main square has Mount Vesuvius on one side and the Amalfi Coast mountains on the other. Of course, that’s no coincidence. But it is a masterpiece in urban planning. It makes you dream awake and imagine what it would have been like 2 thousand years ago.

Now for the negatives. call me scary But I expected to see more corpses and personal items from the residents. I only saw a couple of them in the forum area. The National Architecture Museum in Naples apparently contains most of the items that were disposed of in Pompeii.

Which brings me to my next point. Why isn’t there a proper museum in Pompeii? Although impressive, the entire site is a bit bland, apart from the main square. Once you’ve seen one noble house, you’ve seen them all. I feel like there is still a lot of potential that has yet to be unlocked. But still It’s a must-do list for every traveler!

Traveling to Pompeii The best way is to take the train. Circumvesuviana and get off at Pompeii Scavi station. You can take the local train, which stops at every station, or the Campania Express, which stops only at the line’s tourist stops.

The entrance to the ruins of Pompeii – Porta Marina – is a 4-minute walk from the station. Expect to be hit with hints. “You have to wait at least 1 hour in line for tickets” and “You should get a tour guide” blah blah blah. Don’t believe them and do as below.
