Combine this with inaccurate record keeping, and publishers exaggerating their sales as a means of promotion, and we have no way of determining exact numbers, much less with enough precision to make a non controversial list. There are so many variables – so many known unknowns – that it’s hard to make something definitive. So here’s what we did, with some self-imposed rules:
