Zion To Bryce Canyon: 22 Best Stops & Itinerary (2023) ⋆ We Dream Of Travel Blog

Let us help you plan your adventure to Las Vegas, Grand Canyon National Park, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Antelope Canyon, Hoover Dam, Boulder City and other nearby regions. Bryce Canyon is Utah’s smallest national park and perfect for a day trip, either from Zion National Park (as we did) or if you’re passing through on a longer trip.

Its compact size makes it easy to visit Bryce Canyon in one day. Even with half a day, you’ll be able to admire the magical hoodoos (twisted rock towers) from various vantage points above and walk among them at the Bryce Amphitheater.

In this post, I share our one-day Bryce Canyon itinerary plus tips on how to make the most of your visit and a map with all the places mentioned.

Our day trip to Bryce Canyon from Zion National Park was part of a longer trip. Check out our southwest travel itinerary wherever we’ve been.

One Day In Bryce Canyon

We stayed at the Cable Mountain Lodge in Springdale, which has an ideal location right outside the gates of Zion Park. The lodge has incredible mountain views, a pool and hot tub, and rooms have kitchenettes.

If you’d rather stay closer to Bryce (especially to see the sunrise and sunset), check out the park’s Bryce Canyon Lodge (closed in winter) or the Best Western Plus in the small village of Bryce Canyon City just outside the park.

We left Springdale at 6:30am and arrived in Bryce at 8:15am. An early start is always recommended to enjoy the parks before they get too busy.

We went on our winter visit in the dark and saw the sunrise on the way. The first part of the drive from Zion to Bryce Canyon is on the Scenic Drive of Mt. Carmel Highway.

It is a very winding road past high rocky peaks. As you pass through Zion’s east entrance, you will need to show your park pass.

Bryce Canyon is open year-round. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit because of the milder weather without the summer crowds, although it is not as busy as Zion.

Winter is the quietest time to visit. We loved our mid-February trip, despite the 14ºF (-10ºC) temperatures. With four layers, we were able to stay warm while hiking.

Bryce sees snow a lot, and the hoods look especially magical at this time. There was no snow in the park for several weeks on our trip, but there was still some left in the shadier areas.

The trails are icy in winter so hiking shoes or boots with good traction are essential. I also highly recommend the traction devices that attach to your shoes for extra traction (they sell them at the visitor center).

We used the Kahtoola Microspikes, which were fantastic and kept us from slipping on the steep icy sections of the trail.

Note that some roads, trails and toilets close in winter, but there is still plenty to do. Check the Bryce NPS website for updates.

During the four hours we spent in the park, we only covered the first three miles and saw a lot. You don’t have to drive far to see the best parts of Bryce.

If you have more time, you can extend the hike on the Peekaboo Trail and drive to Rainbow Point, the most distant viewpoint.

You will pass through the entrance gates of Bryce Canyon National Park just before the visitor center. Here you will have to pay the entrance fee ($35 for 7 days per vehicle).

I recommend purchasing the America the Beautiful National Parks annual pass for $80 if you will be visiting other Utah parks such as Zion. You can buy it in advance from REI to save time or at the door.

The Visitor Center is the obvious first stop to use the restrooms, check current conditions, and get any advice for visiting the park. There is a convenience store (with a few basic snacks) and a water bottle filling station.

In winter, the visitor center and Sunset Point are the only places with open restrooms on this one-day Bryce trek. In the warmer months you will also find them at Inspiration Point.

You can easily drive this during a day at Bryce Canyon and stop at the many viewpoints to peer into the Bryce Amphitheater.

The first view is Sunset Point. You don’t have to be here at the end of the day to enjoy the spectacular display of colorful hoodoos, spiers of eroded rock that jut out from the sides of the canyon.

Bryce has the highest concentration of hoodoo in the world, and is truly unlike any we’ve seen before.

How To Spend The Most Perfect One Day In Bryce Canyon National Park

There is no parking at Sunrise Point, but it is a flat, easy 0.5 mile walk along the rim from Sunset Point with more great views along the way.

I highly recommend hiking down to the
