As part of the projects to be presented at The 7 Seas Motel during Miami Art Week 2021, local artists will take over the motel’s rooms and common areas for Collabo 7. The “Collabo” presentation takes place (almost) every two years. , an artist-led pop up for almost 17 years. Each iteration of the collaboration has centered around a single theme—Collaborative Artmaking—and has functioned as an event that consistently brings the entire Miami Art community together on equal terms, with no other motive than to strengthen connections among members of the art community.

The 7 Seas Motel | 5940 Biscayne Blvd. Miami Fl 33137 | November 29 – December 5, 2021 Tony Sherman’s boat-designed motel – as the bay was visible from the property at the time – this blocky motel built in 1953 was named Sindbad the Sailor. His instantly recognizable neon signs, which remain today, are featured in the 1995 film.

The hotel, with its neon signs and angular facade, is in the hands of the family, who have owned it since the 1980s. Renovated in 2009 (with lots of flamingo decor) to keep up with the changing MiMo district landscape, they seek out customers interested in quiet quality and offer a funky outdoor happy hour in the courtyard.

Architect Edwin Reeder designed this motel in 1951, and it stood alone with the others until a complete makeover in 2013. With communal balconies and MiMo accents – including signature neon signs – it offers clean, affordable accommodation.

With its futuristic asymmetry and angularity, The Vagabond was a vision of Miami Modern. Designed by Robert Swartburg in 1953, it was a magnetic motel/lounge for the Rat Pack. Now it has been thoroughly reinvented and modernized, with an elegant pool, upscale restaurant and more.

Although this property has the history and features of the architecture, room rentals are not possible as the property is currently closed. Instead, head here to admire the neon sign that spells out the “I” in “Inn,” complete with a palm tree, and dine at Danny Serfer’s Blue Collar, serving some of Miami’s best comfort food.
