Chronological Order Of Marvel Movies

*Spoiler alert: Although we will not write in detail about the movies in the MCU, there will be some spoilers if you are not aware of them.

How To Watch Every Marvel Cinematic Universe Movie In Chronological Order

Superhero movies are always popular. Ever since Christopher Reeve’s first outing as Superman in 1978, there has always been some sort of comic book adaptation in the works. For decades, the biggest superheroes on our big screen were Batman and Superman. But that all changed in 2008 when Robert Downey Jr donned his armor for the first time. Since then, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (referred to as the MCU) has become the biggest film franchise of all time. Spanning 32 films (at the time of writing) and a decade of hype and action, Marvel movies have grossed nearly $28 billion dollars worldwide.

The interconnected nature of the MCU makes watching and re-watching all the movies part of the fun. And the launch of Disney Plus means all the MCU movies (including at least one of Tom Holland’s three Spider-Man movies) are available to stream on the same platform. But the big question is, which sequence did you watch it in?

Do you prefer to watch all the movies as they come out, starting with Iron Man and ending with Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3? Do you want to watch events as they happen and prefer Marvel’s chronological order? Do you watch all the Marvel movies or just watch the best and get to Endgame as soon as possible?

You don’t have to decide now. Check out our guide on how to watch Marvel movies to see which ones you like the most.

Marvel Movies Checklist In Chronological Order Check Off All The Ones You’ve Seen! O 1.)

There are a lot of time jumps in the MCU, with some films set in the past, some in the future, and some jumping between the two. In fact, it is the basis for the entire plot of Endgame. After watching all the movies at least once, some fans prefer to watch the Marvel movies chronologically, starting with Captain America: The First Avenger and ending with the latest MCU release, which is currently Thor: Love and Thunder.

Watching the MCU movies in chronological order is a fun way to see all the callbacks, Easter eggs, and early foreshadowing that you might have missed the first time you watched the movie. For example, Nick Fury calling Captain Marvel after the events of Infinity War has added impact when you’ve already watched them meet in the solo Captain Marvel movie.

This isn’t 100% accurate thanks to Marvel’s famous mid- and post-credits which cause some overlap, particularly in Captain Marvel, Black Widow and Ant-Man and The Wasp. Not to mention the flashbacks in Eternals take place several thousand years ago. But for the most part, here’s how to watch all the MCU movies in Marvel chronological order:

If you want to go a step further, you can integrate Disney Plus Marvel TV shows in your next rewatch. While WandaVision was released first, Loki started during the events of Endgame, which took place in 2012. So, here’s how to watch the MCU movies and TV shows in chronological order:

Marvel In Chronological Order

Like me, you probably prefer to watch Marvel movies in the order they were intended – that is, the order they were originally released. Here’s how to watch Marvel movies in order of release date:

Marvel hasn’t revealed too much about Phase 6 of the MCU. However, they have announced the titles and release dates of the three main films in their next production slate:

If you’re new to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and want to catch up on the movies without having to watch all 32, here’s a short list of MCU movies you need to watch to make sense of it all.

There will be characters that appear that you don’t immediately recognize (Captain Marvel and Dr. Strange) and the odd reference that you will miss, but overall, you will get the gist of what has happened in the MCU and be able to watch the best, funniest and most effective of all time.

Marvel Movies In Order: How To Watch Mcu Movies And Shows Chronologically

Some die-hard Marvel fans have gone so far as to watch the 29 MCU movies in order of their ratings on review platforms like IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. Even if it means you watch the movie completely out of order, it can be a good way to save the best for last, as it were. If you start your MCU party with The Incredible Hulk – a movie most of us don’t really think of as part of the MCU – and work your way up to the last two Avengers installments.

This, however, is a very subjective list. I personally wouldn’t put Dr. Strange above Black Panther. Therefore, you may want to modify this particular list to suit your own opinion.

The events that take place in the MCU universe span thousands of years, and the time it takes to watch all the movies in this universe is also quite long. With 32 films released over 17 years, each phase of the MCU seems to introduce longer and longer film runs, with the Avengers’ epic finale clocking in at just over three hours.

So how long will it take you to watch all the MCU movies? Here are all the MCU movies in order from shortest to longest:

Marvel Films In Order: Which Order Do The Marvel Movies Go In?

This means that, so far, the MCU’s total runtime is 68 hours and 36 minutes. So if you wanted to watch the entire Marvel timeline, non-stop, back-to-back, it would take you two and a half days.

Call me old-fashioned, but I think it’s best to watch Marvel movies for the first time in the order they were released. With all the post-credits teasers, plot twists and character development, the release order gives you the ultimate introduction to each Marvel character and their place in the wider MCU.

The best way to watch all the Marvel movies is either in release order or chronological order. You can also watch them in order of best ranking or shortest to longest.

Spider-Man Far From Home is currently not available to stream on any UK streaming services. However, you can buy the digital version on Amazon Prime Video.

Black Widow’s solo film takes place after the events of Captain America: Civil War and before the events of Avengers: Infinity War.

Shang Chi isn’t technically an Avenger… yet. He meets Bruce Banner and Captain Marvel in the post-credits scene of his solo film. But there’s still no official confirmation of him joining the team, or if there will be any more Avengers movies in the MCU’s future. He will, however, most likely appear in other upcoming Marvel projects and get a sequel to his successful solo feature. Why so serious? Maybe the cast of Avengers: Endgame got their heads around the ins and outs of the MCU
