Who Invented Stand Up Comedy?
Top comedians choose the routines that make them howl with laughter, from Eddie Murphy in Rocky to Eddie Izzard in Razors and Michelle Wolf in Women’s Worst Enemies.
Andy Daly’s routine skit about nothing has a cult following among comedy fans. The American comedian, a regular on shows including Conan, appears as bland but confident observational comic Jerry O’Hearn. And somehow he’s able to create five incredibly funny minutes without saying anything in particular.
I first saw the routine about eight years ago. There is a YouTube clip of a bootleg recording labeled: “Jerry O’Hearn (Andy Daly) at MaxFunCon 2011.” Daly is quick to establish O’Hearn’s view: “All these things going on in the world today? You’ve got to be kidding me!” What follows is an ambiguous, no-nonsense attitude that’s nonetheless executed with the self-righteous bewilderment of a man convinced he’s fixing the world. It’s a no-frills stroll through all the classic themes, which works with gusto.
The routine is not only very entertaining, however. From a more technical nerd perspective, it’s amazing to see that standup, completely stripped of any real content, can still be recognized as standup. Watching this clip, with its bright light and distant sound, gives one the pleasure of a niche discovery: something unique, daring, clever, silly and gloriously vague.
Clean Stand Up Comedians Take Center Stage
When I was a teenager, the big acts rarely traveled to New Zealand, so I got most of my attitude through comedy albums I borrowed from the library or CDs bought from the shop. My favorite was the 2007 album Impersonal by American comedian Paul F Tompkins.
My most listened to song was Peanut Brittle. The whole routine is about those novelty cans labeled peanut brittle that actually contain crumb-laden snakes. The skit is completely spot-on, seamlessly flowing between observations about the stupidity of the product and impressions of executives trying out new fonts for the can to keep the product relevant. It culminates in a long section where Tompkins becomes a naive recipient of the can, oblivious to the inside joke.
I attribute most of my comedy taste and style to this routine. I learned a lot about rhythm with Tompkins. Great standup requires an equal balance of strong performance and strong writing – when you see the perfect alchemy of these, it feels like real magic. I love Tompkins for all the reasons I love comedy: he turns the obscure or the niche into something relatable, with silly voices, screams, and a celebration of the shared human experience. This is comedy, baby!
Back in 2006, when I was performing at the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal, I was still pretty naive and nervous about getting started. Everything felt loud and noisy. But then, backstage at a concert, I saw a comic that looked a lot like it
