We have taken many road trips in the US and this is our favorite country for road trips. From Route 66 to the Oregon Trail to the Pacific Coast Highway to the Deep South, we’ve had some amazing road adventures across the states.
One of our most popular US road trip plans is our two-week California road trip plan. However, readers often ask me how it stacks up against some of the other popular destinations in the US, especially Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon.
Distance From Las Vegas To South Rim Grand Canyon
In response to that request, I’ve put together this two-week US road trip itinerary through parts of the southwestern and western United States.
The itinerary includes California highlights, such as Yosemite and Death Valley National Parks, as well as the Pacific Coast Highway, San Francisco and Los Angeles. It also has you driving the iconic routes of Route 66, spending time in Las Vegas, and visiting the incredible Grand Canyon.
This is an extension of the popular “Golden Triangle” road trip, which usually includes Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Our road trip itinerary takes you through three states—California, Arizona, and Nevada—and is perfect for two- to three-week trips.

Obviously, since you’re trying to see quite a bit on this itinerary, it will require quite a bit of driving, and you can’t see absolutely everything. We recommend a minimum of two weeks for this trip, but if you have a little more time, you can easily extend it to three weeks or more with a few more stops along the way.
Grand Canyon Maps
For now, let’s take a look at this itinerary day by day to see how it looks. As always, please use this itinerary only as a guide and feel free to adjust it to your specific interests!
I have designed this itinerary in a circle, so you start and finish at the same place. This makes things like renting a car easier, because if you rent a car in one place and leave it somewhere else, there’s often a one-way fee. However, this is not always the case, for example we have rented in Las Vegas and dropped off in San Francisco and not been charged.
Of course, if you want to avoid driving in the US, you can also take tours that follow a very similar route, like this one. You can check out a list of tour options later in the post.
A circular route also means that you can start and finish anywhere along the route and you can do it in any direction. If you’re flying in early, cities with major airports include Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. For now, we assume that you want to start in Las Vegas.
Las Vegas To Grand Canyon
We recommend starting your road trip in America in Las Vegas. The city is world famous as an adult playground with gambling, shows, restaurants and bars galore. This is an easy place to spend money very quickly!
However, there is definitely more to Las Vegas than the famous Las Vegas Strip, both in the city and in the surrounding area. The stunning Valley of Fire State Park is a short drive away, and you can also easily visit the impressive Hoover Dam. So, whether you’re into natural wonders or man-made delights, you’re sure to find something to do.
Our recommendation is to spend two days in Las Vegas. There is a lot to do in the city and if you are arriving from a different time zone, these two days will give you time to adjust. However, if you want to venture out of town, we’ve also included some suggested trips to popular nearby attractions.
With about two days to explore, depending on when you arrive in town, you should be able to see a good amount in Las Vegas.
Grand Canyon Skywalk: Prices, Tickets, Getting There From Las Vegas
Some of our personal highlights that we recommend include the views from the top of the Stratosphere Tower, visiting the famous Welcome to Las Vegas sign for a photo opportunity, walking the Strip at night, watching the famous Bellagio fountain show, and visiting the Mob Museum.
You’ll also probably want to take in one of the shows hosted nightly at venues across the city. There are so many shows to choose from, you can view options and book in advance online. Another popular activity in Vegas is dining. The city has a number of truly world-class restaurants as well as spectacular buffets.
There’s also no shortage of shopping if you want to indulge in a bit of retail. We also suggest getting some rest and relaxation by your hotel pool as part of your acclimatization strategy. There will be a lot of driving and sightseeing in the coming days, so some relaxing by the pool with a beer or cocktail will start your trip off on the right foot. Alternatively, if you are more of a thrill seeker, there are also a number of fun rides that you can do in the city.
Finally, you’ll probably want to indulge in the pastime that Vegas is famous for – gambling. There are many casinos to choose from, many hotels also have large casino operations. Even if you don’t want to gamble, it’s worth visiting a few casinos because the buildings themselves are so iconic.
Las Vegas To Grand Canyon Road Trip & Drive (2023 Edition)
In terms of transportation in Las Vegas, the city has many options. It’s also fairly wide, so while you can walk, it will probably take you longer than you think. The temperature in summer also makes walking very uncomfortable.
Alternatively, you can consider one of the popular shared services, a taxi or the monorail, which connects many key points in the city. We recommend not driving in Las Vegas –
