If you’re looking for something super unique to do on your way from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, this is the stop for you.

If you love exploring ghost towns, you’ll want to stop here at Calico Ghost Town on your way from LA to Vegas Drive. This mountainside mining town was abandoned in the 19th century and is now a tourist attraction.

Pay a small fee to explore and see the Mystery Shack full of optical illusions, including a place where water flows uphill. You can take your ghost town experience to the next level by taking a nighttime ghost tour and staying overnight at the campground here, which is great for tents and RVs.

This oddly named road is a different kind of detour. Drive the 5-mile dirt road that inspired the movies and songs to reach the palm-fringed lake. In addition to being a desert research facility for the University of California, at the end of the road there is a completely abandoned and slightly creepy resort – even more of a ghost experience than maybe Calico Ghost town.

The town of Baker is a great place to stop on your road trip and is full of many stops on the classic Highway 15. Grab some snacks at the Alien Jerky Restaurant, famous for its variety of jerky flavors, and take a photo by the towering tallest thermometer in the world before heading back on your way.

The Mojave National Preserve is the third largest national park in the United States, and you can see it while you’re in Baker. You can drive through or plan a hike if you have more time. See the vast desert landscape, mountains and the largest Joshua Tree Forest.

The Pioneer Saloon is one of the oldest bars in Nevada and was a favorite haunt of old time celebrities including Clark Gable. The 30-foot-tall rainbow rocks were only meant to be a temporary art exhibit, but their immense popularity has kept them around longer. Although you can see them from the highway, you’ll want to stop and see them in person. They are located between two highway exits.
