1964 was a very busy year for Elvis. Three movies, two soundtracks, an EP, various singles, the pursuit of Priscilla, and a public engagement left him little time for anything else. Viva Las Vegas is one of Elvis Presley’s best films, and at the time a complete soundtrack had not yet been released. This oversight has now been corrected. The soundtrack, released by FTD in its Special Edition Soundtrack Series, features an improved re-mastering of the original LP with additional backup footage, and more… The CD itself contains previously released and previously unreleased footage. It’s a standard CD, but in a deluxe 7-inch (17.5 cm) (like a single or EP) tri-fold package. This FTD version features three duets with Ann-Margret,
The CD itself contains previously released and previously unreleased outtakes. It’s a standard CD, but in a deluxe 7-inch (17.5 cm) (like a single or EP) tri-fold package. It includes a 12-page booklet with photos and images of relevant information as well as “Behind the Scenes” facts, “In And Outtake” and “Off Camera” pages. You can see an example of the Girl Happy version here.
It also featured Ann Margaret, with whom Elvis had a year-long affair. The chemistry between the two is very palpable. They would remain friends until the end of his life. The film benefits from the direction of veteran George Sidney. He reshot the scene over and over again from different angles. He pissed off Colonel Tom Parker for going over the film’s budget, but he did make a clever commercial film that ranks as one of Elvis’s best films and is still very entertaining. The film may have the strongest songs of any Elvis film, and it’s inconceivable that the RCA label didn’t release a full soundtrack album at the time. Ann-Margret, who sang on several songs, was also under contract with RCA, so that wasn’t a problem. A single and a four-song EP were released in 1964. Now the complete soundtrack has been released on CD via the official Follow That Dream Collection label and is well worth checking out.
Elvis Day By Day: May 28
“Viva Las Vegas” remains a Presley classic. Elvis Presley’s vocal performance is a joy. His voice has matured over the past few years, taking on a rare timbre and timbre. History records that Elvis recorded the song in one take. Why the single failed is beyond me.
Elvis was always able to transform other artists’ classic songs into his own creations. Here, Elvis takes the rhythm and blues standard “What d I Say” and gives it a driving rock performance. When comparing this version to the famous Ray Charles performance, Elvis comes off pretty well.
Ann-Margret was by this time an experienced singer and performer, having sung on a number of songs. “The Lady Loves Me” and “You’re The Boss” were not used in the film but are included on the modern CD version, they are duets and both showcase the chemistry between the two stars. She gives the songs an emotional appeal and Elvis’s professionalism never overpowers her vocals. Ann-Margret takes a step forward, singing lead vocals on “Appreciation” and “My Rival.” Ann-Margret is so compelling at this point in her career that it’s probably better to watch her perform than just listen to her songs, but overall, the songs are pretty good.
The album also features many other Elvis compositions. “C mon Every” is a nice uptempo pop tune that Elvis was already very good at writing at this point in his career. “I Need Someone To Love” has the feel of a small Las Vegas lounge show, and I mean that in a good way. Elvis created a sense of intimacy for the listener. “If You Think I Don’t Need You” goes in a different direction, showcasing Elvis’ versatility on both this score and the film. It’s an upbeat dance song that almost made me stand up and dance.
Elvis Soundtrack Cd
Viva Las Vegas, both as a movie and as a modern CD soundtrack, is an Elvis Presley classic and remains highly entertaining. When Elvis was motivated by quality material and a sound script, he could produce amazing work. Ann-Margret’s energy and appeal were also an important factor. The soundtrack has been recorded on CD in a variety of formats, but most allow you to hear the movie Elvis at his best.
