There was a time when I watched a movie and a half in the Fast & Furious franchise.

I’ve always been skeptical of the power of movies, probably because I’ve only seen 2 Fast 2 Furious (the worst part) and Fast Five.

Movies is one of the best movie franchises America has going for it right now – and perhaps a wonderfully dumb reflection of everything that’s good about America.

They pride themselves on their love of old, practical effects, which is what most of the cars we bump into here

Cars crash, not computer sprites. They have a large, talented, racially diverse cast. They are characterized by open sentimental, strangely complex stories. They are a testimony of the courage and diversity of this great land, its courage of spirit and openness of heart.

The first film is mostly a small-scale character drama with some car chases thrown in here and there. The seventh film featured cars parachuting out of airplanes. As you can imagine, things got worse as time went on.

Here’s a quick overview of all the films in the franchise, with plot descriptions, international box office totals and official rankings:

The Fast and the Furious (2001): LAPD officer Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) goes undercover among illegal street racers to find out who’s behind a truck theft. There, he develops a fierce rivalry and friendship with the mysterious, hillbilly Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel). Worldwide box office: $207 million.

2 Fast 2 Furious (2003): Brian leaves behind everyone from the first film to track down drug dealers in Miami. There are also car chases, street races and Eva Mendes. This movie is bad. Worldwide box office: $236 million.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006): For 99 percent of the running time, this movie has absolutely nothing going for it.

With the previous two. Sean (Lucas Black), an American teenager, lives in the Japanese version of the Carmen Sandiego game. There, he learns the secrets of drift racing and joins the yakuza. Amazingly worthy! Worldwide box office: $158 million.

(2009): The franchise creates random continuity by randomly collecting the main characters from the first three films (which, mind you, have little to do with each other) and sending them after a drug dealer after a tragedy. The plot makes no sense, but the action is better than ever. Worldwide box office: $363 million.

Fast Five (2011): The pinnacle of the franchise so far largely leaves behind car racing in favor of an elaborate heist plot, with even more characters from the series’ history coming together to take down Brazilian crime lords. The final action sequence is one for the ages. Worldwide box office: $626 million.

Fast & Furious 6 (2013): The franchise takes a complete turn toward melodrama, with double-crosses, amnesia, and daring self-sacrifice as central plots. This is less controversial

(2015): Dom, the brother of the main villain of the sixth film, seeks revenge on Brian and the crew – a scenario that can only end in anger. The Fate of the Furious (2017): A new chapter for the series begins in the first film made since the death of Paul Walker in a car accident in 2013. Has Dom turned against his beloved family? The 1955 film, directed by famous low-budget Hollywood man Roger Corman, was about a criminal who breaks out of prison and has to go very fast to stay in front of the law with a beautiful woman by his side. Elements of this idea are sprinkled throughout the series, but no film in the franchise is a remake of this film. However, universal

The film is also not a remake of the 1939 Busby Berkeley comedy The Fast and the Furious, as the latter is about rare book dealers. Anyway, here’s the trailer for it.

The first film was directed by Rob Cohen and his departure from the sequel was seen as something the franchise couldn’t handle. (He went with Vin Diesel to make XXX.) Cohen’s visual style—which is mostly world-shattering and stretching as those super-fast cars go by—defines the first film in a big way.

The next four films were directed by one of the best action directors working today, Justin Lin. What Lin understands intuitively is that action sequences require long shots that define the geography so we have a better understanding of what is happening with whom and when. The seventh film was directed by James Wan, who is known for his horror work in films such as Saw and Bewitched. He’s an expert at building tension, a skill he’s used to good effect throughout

The eighth film is directed by newcomer F. Gary Gray, who previously helmed 2003’s cool cars The Italian Job.

It should also be noted that films three through eight were all written by Chris Morgan, who became the mastermind behind the franchise’s characters.

The Chronological Order In Which You Must Watch Fast And Furious Films

Franchise – no character has appeared in all seven films. It’s not a conscious choice like it might be in, say, the Marvel movies, where all the characters have their own adventures before coming together in the Avengers movies. Many actors break away to pursue successful careers elsewhere – only to return when those careers don’t quite pay off.

Core Four: This group includes ex-LAPD officer and FBI agent Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker), who sets the series in motion as he tries to get close to street racer and small-time criminal Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his girlfriend. Leticia “Letty” Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez). Of course, Brian gets in too deep and falls for Dom’s sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster). Constant twists and turns in the relationship of these four characters drive every film except the second and third, although Brian is still the main character.

The rest of the crew: These are the characters who join the main four to solve impossible schemes. Roman Pierce (Tyrese Gibson) and Tej Parker (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges) have joined the franchise.

. HanSeul-Oh (Sun Kang) is a humorous philosophical drifter from Tokyo who is so popular that the franchise brings him back from the dead. (More on that in a bit.) Giselle Yachard (Gal Gadot) is a relatively minor character.

Wild Cards : As the films progress past the Brian and Dom era, more characters are brought in to test the group’s dynamic. They include then-evil friend Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) and the mysterious Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell).
