Palm Springs—the largest resort in the Coachella Valley—is best known for its mid-century modern architecture (and the Alexander Construction company that built 2,200 homes in that area between 1955 and 1965). And while you can take tours of the main buildings and get a feel for the movement, it’s just as fun to rent a bike and cycle around districts like Movie Colony, Twin Palms and Vista Las Palmas – where the house Elvis and Priscilla spent their honeymoon at is open for tours.
Many hotels in Palm Springs are stunning mid-century modern icons (the Holiday House is particularly good), but if you’re not staying with a looker, you can spend the afternoon at one. The Ace Hotel—probably the closest thing Palm Springs gets to year-round Coachella—offers passes to its zigzag pool to non-guests starting at $20 a day.
Across Interstate 10 from Palm Springs is Desert Hot Springs, known (obviously) for its mineral springs. Get a day pass for swimming and outré spa treatments; better yet, stay overnight to really soak up the atmosphere. Two Bunch Palms is the gold standard (it’s famous for its therapy where you wallow in mud and has a resident shaman) while The Spring is much smaller but delightfully intimate.

Joshua Tree National Park is about an hour’s drive from Palm Springs, but it’s worth the hour. Perched high on a plateau caused by the rubbing of tectonic plates, it is known for its forests of century-old spiky Joshua tree cacti and its oddly shaped boulders that can look like anything from elephants to skulls. It also has spectacular views of the Coachella Valley below.
In the desert about half an hour from Joshua Tree is the Integratron, built as a meeting place for humans and aliens, and now the site of relatively conventional sound baths. Inside its UFO-like dome is a cedar-lined structure with perfect acoustics; lie down and be serenaded with crystal bowls for an experience like no other.
Pioneertown was built as a Hollywood film to make westerns; then it lapsed. These days it’s having a hipster moment with Instagrammers flooding its one sandy street, shops selling essential oil-based blends and Pappy & Harriet’s, what used to be a well-known bar that’s now sold out on weekends – its popularity starting when Paul McCartney played a secret gig .
Joshua Tree’s where LA hipsters go for the weekend to sleep in simple cabins in the desert, shut off from the world (except wifi) and selfie their hearts out. (Don’t worry, it’s also a haven for artists and people who like the simple life.) Check out Airbnb for tons of listings.

The Salton Sea has been through things: a lake created by tectonic movements, it started as a resort, was abandoned due to pollution (which, along with the high salt levels, killed wildlife – hence the fishbone beaches on the north side) and is now enjoying a resurgence (not least among the local bird population). Its glossy waters provide one of the most beautiful sunsets around. Don’t miss the banana museum.
While you’re at the Salton Sea, don’t miss Salvation Mountain—a public art piece that’s a cross between a crucifixion scene and a Valentine’s Day card, with the purpose of promoting universal love—and Slab City, the apostate community.
No need to actually climb it—the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway takes you up 2.5 miles to the top of 8516ft Mount Jacinto. Go for a hike, have a meal or just enjoy the cooler temperatures – it’s the best place to retreat from the scorching summer heat.

It’s dusk at Coachella. I ride a golf buggy past the muffled thump of the dance tent, a colossal airplane hangar where 10,000 teenagers scream periodically as each song drops. Inside, the light show transforms their assembled bodies into a mesmerizing art installation. A strip of purple-blue sky on the horizon is all that remains of dusk as the sky darkens around us and twinkles with stars. I look back over the crowd—a sea of Ray-Bans and tattooed young Americans against a backdrop of bare mountains and tall palm trees—and I wonder if there’s ever been a more perfect setting for a music festival.
The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival started in 1999, the same year as the disastrous Woodstock ’99 experiment and at a time when the infamous Lollapalooza was on hiatus. Despite being dismissed in its early years as a sterile experience for college kids, Coachella went on to become the only major music festival in the United States.
Thirteen years later, it’s seen as the pinnacle of cool, with a lineup that easily matches Glastonbury and Primavera Sound. Next week’s 2014 festival will see OutKast, Arcade Fire and Pharrell Williams headline, alongside UK acts including PetShop Boys and Disclosure.

Most come here from Los Angeles, heading east along Highway 10 toward the snow-capped Santa Rosa Mountains and thousands of wind turbines spinning in time. Off the highway lies the 800,000 acres of Joshua Tree National Park, an ecological wonder sandwiched between two deserts, the Mojave and Colorado. Its rugged landscape is broken up by five oases and nine campsites, some as high as 1,300 meters above sea level.
Far below, the Salton Sea is one of the lowest places in the United States. There are campsites along the edge of the 30-mile lake, as well as facilities for boating, fishing, kayaking and water skiing. And 20 miles from the festival site is PalmSprings, a resort town populated by well-dressed older Californians who have abandoned LA for a more relaxed pace of life in
