It’s been almost two years since Gov. Steve Sisolak ordered the temporary closure of casinos and other non-essential businesses on March 17, 2020 – an announcement Vladi Bergman remembers well.

Bergman, the founder and CEO of jewelry and accessories store Karma and Luck, said he had to lay off about 90 percent of his staff and close all eight of his stores permanently. But Bergman quickly saw an opportunity, and now it’s paying off.

“We made a big transition from brick and mortar to e-commerce, and our e-commerce business grew 1,000 percent,” Bergman said. “When the stores were closed, my team and I arrived with carts and started to remove all the goods, took them to our warehouse, and brought models to shoot the product. We had millions of dollars in inventory sitting there so we put everything online and sold it.”

Bergman said change is what inspired the company to open its first brick-and-mortar store outside of Nevada. It opened a location at The Galleria mall in Houston in December 2021, and has plans to open two more in New York this month, followed by a store in Los Angeles and Miami.

“We’ve never been aggressive online before, and that opportunity (during the pandemic) was to launch Karma and Luck globally, and that’s exactly what we did — aggressive customer acquisition while people stayed at home,” Bergman said. said.
