Earlier this year, both the Oklahoma and Kansas Departments of Transportation jointly applied for the Federal Railroad Administration’s Corridor Identification and Development Program — also known as the Corridor ID Program.

The grant program was established by FRA after the passage of the bipartisan infrastructure bill in 2021. The Corridor IT project is designed to facilitate the development of inter-city passenger rail routes across the country.
At a Kansas Rail Caucus meeting last week, legislators, transit officials, citizens and cities gathered to hear about the latest updates — and get ideas from other states that have improved their commuter rail infrastructure.
Corey Davis, director of multimodal transportation and innovation at KDOT, gave caucus members an update on the Heartland Flyer extension proposal.
“We’re in the planning phase, where we’re creating a service improvement plan, which provides a blueprint for moving the service forward,” Davis said. “Our goal now is to get that pipeline to access those federal funds.”

“A state does not operate in a vacuum,” Rose said. “Goods and improvements made in a state have spillover effects.”
Rose said there are greater cost savings and greater passenger satisfaction when tracks go further and connect different cities on a single route.
In his presentation, Ross brought up the success of the Missouri River Runner — including 1,250 jobs, $65 million in annual labor income and $208 million in annual economic activity. And, it generated more than $22 million in tax revenue annually — according to River Runner’s Economic Impact Study by 2021.
All of those numbers are possible, Rose said, from state support for the line — as well as representatives from every community served by MODOT, legislators, commuter rail, Amtrak, Union Pacific and rail interest groups.

In 2021, ODOT officials said the challenge will be “how to accommodate freight and passenger rail on this route that currently has no passenger rail.”
BNSF estimates the initial capital investment cost for the track to support passenger rail in 2020 will be $124.4 million. As for the economic impact, Amtrak estimates that the Heartland Flyer extension will bring in $64.8 million annually, and another $1.9 billion from one. Time capital investments.

Until this week, Oklahoma City’s Will Rogers Airport had never seen a Boeing Dreamliner. In fact, wide-body passenger jets are a fairly uncommon sight here – OKC is a more common destination for regional jets than for large international airlines.
Air Tahiti Nui decided to shake things up on Tuesday, however, as the Sooner State made its first 787-9 stopover. I was on the airline’s delivery plane and made my Oklahoma City debut, as was Boeing’s Dreamliner.
Since a 787 pit stop is unusual on such a short delivery flight — the plane’s 8,785-mile range easily handles the 2,200-mile hop from Charleston, South Carolina (CHS) to Los Angeles (LAX) — I turned around. Twitter and Instagram to see if TPG readers can solve the mystery of our plane’s strange detour.

It should be pretty cheap to land, and I’m guessing Boeing isn’t delivering a nearly $300-million machine to its customers.

The stop also gave ground crews a chance to get up close and personal with their first Dreamliner – many walked around the plane, taking photos and posing by the engines. Didn’t get a chance to get on board, but the OKC team took plenty of outdoor photos, some of which made their way to Twitter.
Minutes after landing, we were back on the runway and on our way to Los Angeles. No, we didn’t pick up any cheap OKC fuel.
