Nickelodeon has given us some amazing animated shows over the years. Rugrats, Spongebob Squarepants, The Fairly Oddparents, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, Doug, Hey Arnold, Catdog, The Modern Life of Rocco, The Ren and Stumpy Show, Invader Zim and many others, but none as popular as Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra. History. These two shows single-handedly redefined what modern, long-form animated TV could be, giving viewers an unlikely story of growth, war, and destiny. Animated or otherwise, it’s simply a fantastic story, and easily one of my personal favorites. Just in time for the holidays, we’ve got a new box set to check out – the Ultimate Aang & Korra Blu-Ray Collection. Let’s open it up, compare it to the previous box set, and see what’s new in the Kingdom of Benders.
I don’t want to spoil anything on either show, so rest assured this will be a spoiler free review with little more than some basic setup.
There’s a lot to enjoy in this box set. First up is the complete, 44-hour show, but a new bonus disc packed with new special bonus features is also spread across 18 Blu-ray discs. That said, only the last disc is new to the box set if you have the previous or Steelbook set. The latter was over-compressed, so maybe this box set is better for that alone. On that final disc is a fantastic interview with the shows creators Mike DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Plus, there’s Behind the Scenes with Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast hosts Janet Varney (who plays Korra) and Dante Basco (the voice behind Generals Iroh and Zuko). In 80 minutes, they discuss how they brought the show to life, covering everything from how challenging it was to deliver Foley’s effects like water and fire, as well as lots of great information about the co-creative process. There’s usually very little on offer when you get a box set reissue, but here we’ve got something worth the price of admission.
Gifts Any Fan Of Avatar And The Legend Of Korra Wants
Beyond the excellent extra disc content, there are eight watercolor cards measuring 6″x4.5″ and relatively thick card stock. Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko, Korra, Jet, Asami, and Bolin round out the gang, although I wish they’d include fan favorites like Appa, Sokka, and Toph, but we can’t have everything, right?
While the Steelbook’s black and silver look is stunning, the new outer packaging for this box set is just as beautiful. Sumi’s beautiful art style depicts Aang and Korra in a yin-yang style as they unleash their power, spreading red and blue around them. On the plastic inner box we see an image for Aang and Friends and Korra, although the box art for both is identical to the original releases on Blu-ray and DVD. The bonus disc and art card sleeve are basically the same kind of yin and yang art, but with the main characters facing us instead of off to the side. On the opposite side are the primary symbols for the four elements, fire, water, air and earth. New art is always welcome, and this one will look great on your shelf.
Speaking of how it looks, let’s talk about transfers. Model: The Last Airbender was shown in 1:33:1 aspect ratio (4:3 aspect ratio) so you’re stuck with that. The show was also shown when it was standard definition television, so upscaling will have some effect but not perfect. That said, there is no doubt that some work has been done – the colors look bright and vibrant, and nowhere is it more obvious than in the series of water and fire conflicts. Honestly, the story is so good, you can’t even care about the transfer – that’s all. On the other hand, the Legend of Korra offers vivid color and beautiful saturation on all textures, with a 1.77:1 (16:9 aspect ratio).
The sound options are what you’d expect from a show made in 2005. The English tracks are mastered in 48kHz, 24-bit DTS-HD 2.0, while the French and Spanish audio tracks get the same treatment. It’s got enough oomph to give those epic elements a decent amount of punch, though the lack of a dedicated subwoofer channel is noticeable. As for subtitles, there’s only English of course – a welcome addition for those of us with hearing problems, though additional subtitles are available for other markets. It was nice to see works.

In the year In 2018, Netflix acquired the rights to a live-action Avatar show, setting up Avatar Studios to bring it to life. Equally exciting, Avatar creator and Avatar Studios CEO Brian Konitzko announced that future animated shows will be coming at some point in the future. While there’s a big gap between Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra (4 years to be exact), it’s been almost 8 years since the last installment. We hope that both these future projects will be as successful as expected.
