Three weeks on the Mississippi will sail through the United States I have not explored. Cities and towns were new to me.

This post takes you on my journey down the Mississippi River from New Orleans to Memphis. I hope to inspire you to get onboard and experience the conflicting history, regional culture and delicious food here in America.

Day Mississippi River Cruise Roundtrip From New Orleans On American Queen

It will be a week of grisly Civil War battlefield sights and stories, tours of opulent plantations with their costumed glamor and turbulent past. There is a walk through some of the American cities that grew up along the river.

In addition, we will have the opportunity to enjoy the southern regional cuisine that includes its French and later Creole and Cajun influences.

There is a bow for stern remodel and refurbishment. The ocean now looks modern but still cozy. Muted tones of beige and aqua, plus accents in navy and deep red are in the new fabrics and decor.

All 150 passengers were mostly elderly and mostly Americans, with a few Brits and Australians. All were involved in 1800 souls.

History Is Huge Draw For Mississippi River Cruise Goers

A few men and women were wearing dresses or hats with ribbons and other small items of nostalgia. In the beginning, the workers were dressed as if they were sent by Central Casting. It’s a Mississippi River Cruise.

The cruise price includes an overnight stay before the cruise at the Whitney Hotel in New Orleans. This is very convenient for the cruise line to pick up almost all of their guests from one place in the city to the port.

Left New Orleans well before the dinner chimes were heard. We are on our way to the harbor in the evening. Oak Alley, Louisiana USA

Just a few hours into our Mississippi river cruise was our first port of call; Vacherie, Louisiana for a stop at Oak Alley Plantation. Aglow at sunset, the plantation is very spectacular to see.

River Cruises Make Resurgence, Lifting Memphis’ Economy, Too

Maybe it’s the 300-year-old canopy of live oaks or the warm glow from the lantern.

An evening walk along the 1/4 mile path from the ship’s gangway to the two-door greenhouse entrance is a great way to walk to dinner. Set up Mr. Peabody’s Wayback Machine to 1837.

Once a rich plantation, Oak Alley was built on the backbone of slavery. Between 110 and 120 men, women and children live in slavery on the tree. Almost all Mississippi River cruises stop at Oak Alley.

The next morning, all events disappeared with the light of day, or so I hoped. Tour guides in period costumes take us through the various rooms, discussing the history and events from the plantation’s nearly 200 years.

After the tour, and baking in the heat and humidity, everyone slowly returned to the Mississippi River. Our boat that waits in the cold air is a welcome sight.

As we neared Baton Rouge in the evening, it was a strange contrast to the modern sky with an Antebellum mood. A light drizzle curtailed our plan to walk the wide river promenade.

I like the idea of walking on a foggy evening along the river but no one wants to go.

It’s still a little too far to walk to peek at the USS Kidd Naval Destroyer permanently docked on the Mississippi. Instead, many guests stay on board and relax on the chairs under the awning of the Sun Deck.

The second day of our river cruise started with a coach driver from Baton Rouge. Tourists visiting these old buildings seem to love a good story. The first stop is a tour of the castle-like Old State Capitol Building.

A woman dressed in Antebellum clothing eagerly retells the story of the “Ghost of Sarah Morgan” with tales of the Capitol’s Civil War history and past ghosts. Then go to the new and hopefully not haunted State Capitol Building (also known as Huey P. Long’s monument).

A beautiful French Creole plantation house, Magnolia Mound dates from 1791. Several buildings, including an outdoor kitchen, a slave kitchen, a caretaker’s house and a shabby three-seater outhouse Includes a 900-acre area.

Natchez, Mississippi, our third stop, began with a city driving tour that wound through tree lined trails and a drive to the waterfront.

Life At Eight Miles Per Hour On The Mississippi River

The first stop was Longwood, a huge and elegant six-story mansion. The construction of this octagonal-shaped building began in 1859.

The completion of Longwood will not happen. At the start of the Civil War in 1861, all construction workers had to leave their jobs and go to war.

Downtown Natchez was founded by French settlers in 1716. It’s definitely worth walking through just to pass the red bougainvillea, stop for an iced tea and explore the small clothing store. and stores. Or like me, buy another cookbook.

The next morning, the Mississippi River took us to Vicksburg, Mississippi. An important site for battle in the war, archaeologists are still finding artifacts buried in the mud.

Riverboat Cruising Returning To The Mississippi River In August –

A visit to Vicksburg National Military Park is a memorial to the Battle of Vicksburg and the 47-day siege in 1863.

Civil War Civil War, monuments and memorials dominated the topic of the day in Vicksburg. When we reached the National Military Entrance, a park map explained the situation and explained what happened where and why.

Not a Civil War buff, (I’m a Lewis and Clark enthusiast) I learned more about the Civil War than I could absorb in a two-hour tour.

, an iron clad gunboat sunk in battle in 1862. The antique gunboat was found near the Yazoo river in 1956, buried in the dirt and mud.

Book 8 Days Lower Mississippi (new Orleans To Memphis) (5 November 2025)

Like many small towns along the Mississippi River, Vicksburg is high on my list of places on the cruise ship that I want to see again. The city’s Civil War History is almost unknown to me.

Vicksburg’s Riverfront Murals depict the history of Vicksburg, Mississippi and the role the city played in the building of America.

There is time back at the port to explore the beautiful Yazoo and Mississippi R.R. Station building, now the old Museum Depot.

I wish I had a little more time to look at all the drawings but they seem endless. Painted by Robert Dafford, the murals were unveiled to the public in April 2002.

After your busy day exploring Vicksburg, be sure to leave time to walk and explore along the waterfront. It’s worth it.

We had to stop right on Beale Street, the heart of Memphis. Instead, the ship’s Captain had to stop at Mud Island because of a special public event.

I decided to go on a tour of Graceland even though I’m not an Elvis fan (it was a few years before I saw a transistor radio!) That’s his house, not very beautiful and looks like suburban house in the north of the city than I expected. .

Graceland seems frozen in time. You can tour all the rooms below but the upstairs, where Elvis died, is off limits.

The Return Of The Paddle Wheel Steamboat Vacation

Although the building is not large, it is the surrounding area and exterior that gives Graceland its original architectural style.

I would be happy to make a cruise to the south and revisit all the places we saw in the north.

As on all seven-day cruises, whether sea or river, the days go by very quickly. Our Mississippi River cruise covers many areas.

We traveled a total of more than 453 miles along the Mississippi River. Next time, I want to repeat this trip and continue north of the river to St. Paul, Minnesota. Or reverse.

Memphis To New Orleans River Cruise

Unlike everyone else on this cruise who was flying home, I chose to ride overnight on Amtrak’s famous city of New Orleans train from Memphis to New Orleans.

I kept my bedroom, and looked forward to a restful night, a meal in the dining car (or my room) and of course, a hot cup of coffee on the train.

Instead of rushing to the airport, this is the last stop for a memorable week. When we arrived in New Orleans, I spent the night and picked up a rental car to drive back to Florida the next day.

The most common Mississippi River cruises are between New Orleans and Memphis or St. There are also several long New Orleans to St. Paul, Minnesota or back to cruise every summer.

Why Your Next River Cruise Should Be In The U.s.

If you are wondering if Mississippi River Cruise ships have a casino, the answer is no. Late night Mississippi River cruise ships do not have a casino.

However, an option would be to take a taxi from the ship if the port you are staying at has a casino nearby. Don’t miss the boat!

. As always, all opinions are my own. It’s been a great week and I wish this cruise a lot of fun.
