Since the Sept. 14 incident, residents in the San Mateo neighborhood say they’ve been reaching out to city leaders asking for action.

Jison Hong’s dashboard camera was rolling as he stopped to let a family cross the street. Seconds after the father and his two young sons stepped into the crosswalk, a dark SUV ripped the boy’s scooter out from under it.
“If she had been, you know, a few seconds later, she could have been seriously injured,” Hong described. “Still, my heart skips a beat every time I think of that moment.”
The girl’s father told our sister station KGO that his daughter is doing great. Although the family is understandably shaken.
We’re also told the driver returned to the scene and spoke with police. San Mateo Police (SMPD) confirmed a report was taken and the department’s traffic unit is investigating.

Hong and other residents explained that the incident was just one example of the closed calls that have occurred at the intersection. Neighbors said they have alerted the city to similar problems in recent years.
“We’ve been writing emails, we’ve been talking at town hall meetings,” said Max Partl, resident and president of the nearby HOA. “I think now, this video finally triggered real action.”
Officer Alison Gilmore said: “We are monitoring traffic in this area so we can continue to be proactive and ensure the area remains safe for residents and pedestrians and other motorists.”
On Wednesday, as SJPD officers acted as pedestrian decoys, we saw how many drivers failed to stop for someone crossing the road.

He told ABC7 News, “As a parent, it was especially difficult to watch what happened and this preventable incident should never have happened. Although the flashing pedestrian beacons worked as designed, this inexperienced driver clearly failed to stop for toddler in crosswalk.”
“When something like this happens we have to ask why and as a result we are taking immediate steps to further improve safety at this intersection. Our Council prioritizes neighborhood traffic safety and in response to this incident, we are increasing pedestrian visibility and reducing speeds in this area while we continue to look at long-term options that legally require further analysis,” his statement continued. “We also need a community-wide approach to improving road safety and everyone, whether driving, cycling or walking, has an important role to play in making sure we keep each other safe.”
As the community pushes to keep their neighbors safe, many can’t help but think about how much worse it could have been.
“I had made eye contact with the family that was about to cross the street,” Hong said of the experience. “Kind of like, in slow motion, I saw out of the corner of my eye, this car going by.”
