Next week is the opening of construction on Donnie and Mary Osmond’s former showroom home in Flamingo. Sims is directing, the TV show’s World of Wonder company is producing, and while RuPaul won’t be returning to the Strip stage, the spirit of his creation will be on full, glamorous display.

“As the entertainment landscape in Las Vegas continues to evolve, we know the next natural step is bringing live versions of the most popular shows on television to the Strip,” said Curt Melian, president of promoter LiveNation Las Vegas. In a fall statement announcing the show. “Combining entertainment as iconic to pop culture as RuPaul with a legendary property like Flamingo Las Vegas is the recipe for the perfect Vegas experience, and we know audiences are in for a night they’ll never forget.”

It’s a quick process with an interactive experience that feels like a live episode of the popular TV competition.

“It definitely has a feel to it, but there are a lot of surprises,” says Sims. “I think that’s what’s fun about it, now you get a chance to see what happens during the taping of the show.”

The live show cast includes some of the queens who appeared on the TV show. The initial cast includes Asia O’Hara, Derrick Barry, Cameron Michaels, Naomi Smalls, Vanessa “Wanji” Matteo and Vivi Vichit.

“Even though we worked with them on a [TV] show, these girls are working from the ground up and making something special,” says Sims. “I can feel it in rehearsals. This is serious business, and they want to make Mama Ru proud. No one wants to be the one to drop the ball on this show. Everyone is coming up with their game, and it’s really cool.

Expect an extraordinary revue filled with music, dance, comedy and fashion, plus plenty of homage to cultural icons and inspirations to pull from. Las Vegas itself is one of those inspirations.

“Vegas pulls me in,” says Sims. “All the glamor and glitz and glitter, everything is here, so it feels like home for drag queens to perform. It also makes sense to be in Flamingo, a natural place for this to happen.

Rupaul’s Drag Race Live! At The Flamingo Las Vegas 2023

We don’t usually risk such an obvious pun. But we’re dealing with “Ru Paul’s Drag Race Live” at the Flamingo Showroom, where anything goes. All shapes and sizes are at play. All forms of humor are exposed. It includes a series of wicked fake slaps (both on stage and from the TV series), a “Sync-O-Meter” gauge for best lip-sync performance, and the instant-classic line from Derrick Berry as Britney Spears, “I’m working on my Adele, because Vegas really needs one!”

Unafraid to wallow in the deep, the show unleashes a serious spirit amid attitude, gags, comic lip-sync numbers and tight choreography. The stage adaptation of “Ru Paul’s Drag Race” is an unqualified hit on the Strip (running Thursday through Monday at 9:30 p.m.).

The show is always in line for the “What Works in Vegas” list. Even on mild midnight nights for all shows during the pandemic, dragsters are drawing three-quarters-capacity audiences.
