Sermon On Jesus The Bread Of Life – Hello, my name is Janice the founder of Christ Unit. Today is Good Friday. I will be preaching on John chapter 6 verses 24 to 71 which is about how to gain eternal life through the death and life of Jesus Christ. Before I begin, let’s pray. Dear Heavenly Father and Lord Jesus Christ, today is Good Friday, help us to know what you have done and the significance of today. Enable me to preach well today. I pray in your name Jesus Christ. Amen.

Please turn your Bible to John chapter 6 verses 24 to 71. I will be using the NIV 1984 version.

Sermon On Jesus The Bread Of Life

24 When the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into a boat and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.

I Am Jesus: I Am The Bread Of Life / John 6:32 35

25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”

26 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs, but because you were filled with bread.

27 Do not work for the food that spoils, but for the food that lasts forever, which the Son of Man will give you. God the Father has put His seal of approval on him.”

30 Then they asked him, “Then what miraculous sign will you give us so that we will believe you when we see it?” what will you do

I Am: The Bread Of Life

31 Our ancestors ate manna in the desert; As it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

32 Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but my Father gave you the true bread from heaven.

33 For he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world is the bread of God.”

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst.

37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

38For I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but to do the will of him who sent me.

39 And this is the will of him that sent me, that I should lose none of all that he hath given me, but raise them up at the last day.

40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Do You Know Jesus As The Bread Of Life?

41 Then the Jews murmured against him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”

42 They said, “Is not this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose parents we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”

44 “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.

45 It is written in the prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Whoever hears the Father and learns from him comes to me.

Life: The Bread Of Life Rejected

46 No one has seen the Father except the one who came from God. Only he has seen the Father.

50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which no man shall eat and die.

51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

52 Then the Jews began to argue among themselves, “How will this man give us his flesh to eat?”

Jesus, The True Bread Of Life

53 Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life in you.

54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him up on the last day.

57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me.

58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate the manna and died, but whoever eats this bread will live forever.”

63 The Spirit gives life; The flesh counts for nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.

64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” Because Jesus knew from the beginning who among them would not believe and who would betray him.

65 He continued, “That is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father enables him.”

71 (He meant Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the twelve, would later betray him.)

In my last Valentine’s Day sermon, I talked about satisfying food from God. Today I will talk more about this.

In today’s passage we see that the people were trying to find Jesus after Jesus fed them and left them in verse 24. Earlier in John chapter 6, Jesus had given them 5 loaves and 2 fish to the 5000 people. He miraculously had 5 loaves and 2 fish and fed them all and still had some left over.

When the crowd saw this miracle, they said that Jesus was the prophet who had come to this world to help them. Jesus knew that they planned to make him king by force. He went away from them, leaving them with his disciples. Then the disciples left them and went to Capernaum by boat. Jesus later met his disciples walking on the water by the lake.

The next day when the crowd left the disciples and Jesus was not around, they thought it strange that the only boat left was not used by Jesus. He did not take the left boat. The people decided to go to Capernaum to find Jesus and so they set out in a boat from Tiberias.

What Did Jesus Mean When He Said, “i Am The Bread Of Life” (john 6:35)?

When they looked for Jesus and asked him when he came there, Jesus did not answer their question. Instead he told them that they were looking for him because they had eaten the loaves and were not satisfied because they believed in Jesus. He told them not to work for the food that perishes, but to eat the food that the Son of Man will give them that lasts for eternal life. Notice that Jesus did not tell his disciples to the crowd about his miraculous walking on the lake, how he came to Capernaum without the names on the left. Jesus is not after fame, popularity. He did not brag. His answer is good for people that they may know him and have eternal life. Perhaps you too are one who does not understand the meaning of Jesus. Let me continue what I will explain next.

Then the crowd asked him what works they wanted God to do. Jesus answered, “This is the work of God: to believe in him whom he hath sent.”

Even after hearing from Jesus, the people did not believe him, they asked him for a miraculous sign to make them believe in him. They told Jesus about the manna from heaven that their ancestors had eaten in the desert. They expected Jesus to be like Moses who showed miraculous signs of bread coming down from heaven.

Then Jesus told them that it is not Moses who gives bread from heaven, but their Father who gives them bread from heaven who comes down from heaven and gives life to people. When Jesus said this, he was confessing that God was his Father and that his Father gave the bread from heaven that gives life to people. He was referring to himself as the bread that God the Father gave to people so that people could have life. Moses did not give bread from heaven. He is God the Father.

Sermon For Jesus Said: I Am The Way, The Truth And The Life

When the people heard this, they asked Jesus for this bread. People still do not understand what this bread is. Jesus then said that he is the bread of life, that whoever comes to him will never hunger and whoever believes in him will never thirst.

They added that although they had seen him, they did not believe him. They only followed him for physical food. They did not believe that he was the bread given by God the Father. They did not understand why they could have bread that would satisfy them with food that would not make them hungry or thirsty to drink. Although they asked Jesus how this bread should be that gives life to people.

Let me explain what Jesus meant when He said that no one who believes in Him shall hunger or thirst. It actually refers to the spiritual food and fountain of living water that Jesus provides for all who believe in Him. Spiritual food is the word of God that gives satisfaction. The spring of living water is referring to the Holy Spirit
