Passenger traffic numbers at Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) are improving during the COVID-19 pandemic. Southern Nevada’s primary commercial airport handled more than 39.7 million passengers last year — more than 17 million more than in 2020.

However, 2021 passenger numbers are lower than 2019, with a record 51.5 million people served on LAS. But Southwest, which already serves more passengers through Las Vegas than any other carrier, is bullish on continued recovery.
Southwest said it will add 12 daily flights to Los Angeles next March, with demand only expected to grow. Announced via the airline’s 2023 flight plan, Southwest says next year’s routing has the “biggest schedule ever from Las Vegas.”
Already Las Vegas’ largest airline, customers looking to travel for a college basketball tournament or to enjoy the amenities of Las Vegas and nearby outdoor national parks and attractions will have more travel options than ever before,” the airline said in a statement.
Beginning in March, 243 Southwest departures are scheduled from LAS each day. That makes Las Vegas Southwest’s second-highest-served market, behind only Denver, where the airline departs 270 times a day.

It’s been more than four years since the US Supreme Court overturned a federal ban on sports betting that limited gambling to Las Vegas. First, the big four major sports leagues and the NCAA strongly opposed allowing a team to call Vegas home.
The NCAA opposed Las Vegas on ethical grounds. It says the region’s widespread legalization of sports betting undermines the integrity of collegiate competitions. But those days are gone now.
The Supreme Court’s landmark decision gave states the right to decide their own laws on sports gambling. This led to leagues and the NCAA relaxing — or even lifting altogether — their reluctance to allow a team or major tournament near Southern Nevada and sportsbooks.
Las Vegas is now home to the NFL Raiders, NHL Golden Knights and WNBA Aces. Expectations are also high that Sin City will become the home city of the NBA and/or MLB in the coming years.
