Spirit Airlines Flights Fort Lauderdale – Some of you may remember my post a few months ago titled “I flew on Frontier Airlines, and it was horrible.” Well, I flew with Spirit Airlines yesterday and I enjoyed the flight on many levels. To me, that’s further proof that not all ultra-low-cost carriers are created equal.

Long story short, I was going to fly from the West Palm Beach area to Austin. There are no direct flights, although Spirit Airlines had a well-timed flight from Fort Lauderdale. That seemed like a better option than driving to Miami to fly American, and it also seemed like a better option than connecting.

The fare was cheap, and then I paid about $100 extra to be assigned one of the Grand Forward seats, which are essentially first class seats without the amenities (or price). While the big front seats aren’t the consistent fare they used to be, this seemed like good value for a comfortable and productive three hours.

Spirit Airlines Suffers Major Delays In Fort Lauderdale

Spirit is probably my favorite ultra-low-cost carrier in the world. Of course, ultra low cost carriers are all about low fares, no frills and a la carte pricing, but Spirit does things a little differently than other ultra low cost carriers.

Spirit does a good job of striking a balance between low prices and realizing that some people still value a decent experience. Not everyone flies Spirit because it is marginally cheaper than the competition, but there is something to be said for flying Spirit for convenience (because the airline operates a non-stop route, has a good schedule, etc.), as was the case for me yesterday.

Basically what it boils down to is that if I have space and high-speed Wi-Fi, I’m happy as a clam (assuming clams are happy, I don’t know), so I can be as productive as on land. There aren’t many ultra-low-cost carriers that offer this.

Honestly, what made my flight on Spirit Airlines so great were the people – especially the crew, but also the passengers. Let me explain in a little more detail.

How Bad Is Spirit Airlines? Not Bad Enough For Me I Guess.

I’ve had a front row seat and always enjoy observing how teams treat each other and how well they align with what their company promises to deliver. The five flight attendants on this flight were ridiculously friendly and fun. Spirit may not have had entertainment on deck, but the crew provided non-stop entertainment. I mean, the flight was basically an emcee event, and (surprisingly?) I loved it.

The flight attendants were honestly just the ultimate ambassadors for Spirit Airlines, and I wish the average crew on the old airlines were as good. It’s not just what they said, but how they said it – it turned out to be true. Here are just a few examples:

Then there was the in-flight trivia part of the flight, which I honestly found hilarious and entertaining. Passengers had to press call buttons to guess and could win prizes ranging from small Spirit plane toys to bonus miles. Questions included:

And you’ll be shocked to hear that the trivial part of the flight has turned into part of the credit card step on the flight. Look, as someone who partially makes a living through affiliate marketing, I respect someone who can hustle, and that’s exactly what this crew did. It was one of the smoothest transitions and the best and most honest pitches I’ve ever seen.

The flight attendants were extremely knowledgeable not only about the Spirit Airlines credit card, but also about the Spirit Airlines loyalty program.

For all the stories we hear about fights on Spirit Airlines, the 200+ people on this flight were some of the kindest, nicest people I’ve ever flown with. Everyone just seemed happy, kind and patient. I know that’s a strange observation, because usually when I fly I don’t think “everyone on this flight looks happy and like they’re having a good time”.

But on this flight… everyone seemed happy and like they were having a good time. That may be in part because this was one of the most extroverted crowds I’ve ever seen on a plane. I feel like everyone is talking to their seatmate, and by the end of the flight they’ve been exchanging numbers and making plans to meet again.

Passengers also seemed to understand basic airplane etiquette. This was in stark contrast to my flight at the border a while back, where people used the restroom without closing the door, walked into the bathroom barefoot, kept trying to bring large bags into the bathroom, etc.

Spirit Airlines is the only ultra-low-cost carrier in the United States that I don’t try to avoid because the airline offers a large front seat and high-speed Wi-Fi. If Spirit has the best schedule, I’m a happy camper, because I have the space and can stay productive.

What continually impresses me about Spirit is the quality of the employees. I find Spirit’s flight attendants to be friendly and truly aligned with the company’s mission. Not only do they provide genuine care and service, but they are really good at working out the loyalty program and credit card, so my hats off to them.

Personally, I still hope that JetBlue’s takeover of Spirit will not be approved, because Spirit brings something unique to the market that is not otherwise offered. Some people flying Spirit Airlines were out of luck this weekend when their flights were canceled or delayed, leaving them stranded at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Frustrated passengers blamed the pilots, who they said had walked off the job. But a Spirit Airlines spokesman stressed on Sunday that there had been no strike.

Travelers At Fll Deal With Another Day Of Canceled Spirit Flights

“The reports of a strike are completely false,” said Eric Hoffmeyer, a spokesman for the Miramar-based airline. “We have an amazing group of pilots working hard during this busy travel season.

In all, 37 flights were canceled at the Fort Lauderdale airport as of Sunday afternoon — and 34 of those were Spirit Airlines flights, according to the flight-tracking website FlightAware.com.

Hofmeier attributed the surge in cancellations to “a culmination of weather events and other operational challenges across various parts of our network. We work directly with our guests to address their needs.”

Hofmeier declined to give details on what operational challenges the low-cost carrier is facing or how many flights have been canceled or delayed.

“FLL is aware of some flight impacts today for Spirit Airlines and the airport operations team is assisting passengers where possible,” she said in the text. “Preliminary information from Spirit this morning indicated that the flight strikes were not due to any pilot/crew strike action.”

A Spirit Airlines Airbus A320 takes off from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on January 19, 2021 in Fort Lauderdale. Several flights were delayed or canceled on Sunday, prompting rumors of a pilot strike. Those rumors are untrue, the airline’s spokesperson said.

“First they delayed it for an hour, then it was delayed for a second hour, and then it canceled on us,” Chambers told a reporter at WPLG-Ch. 10. “And it was a mad rush. “It was like everyone was running around the ticket booths.”

There could be a shortage of staff with gate agents and ramp crew, according to Suresh Athapattu, editor of the industry website Airliners.net.

“I hear they’re being backed up because they’re having staffing issues with people loading and unloading the planes,” he said. “They just don’t have enough of them.” The planes are piling up. And as the day goes on it gets worse and they cancel the flight. That’s what my sources at the airport tell me.”

Atapatu said a pilot told him 30 flights were canceled on Saturday alone due to staff shortages.

In 2010, the airline’s pilots went on a five-day strike after four years of negotiations failed to reach a new contract. The walkout left thousands of travelers stranded across the country.

In 2017, Spirit took a $45 million hit to its earnings due to an alleged work slowdown by pilots that led to the cancellation of more than 850 flights. That includes $25 million in lost revenue and $20 million in additional operating costs related to rebooking passengers. This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers.
