Spirit Airlines announced more destinations from St. Louis and Louisville today. Here’s where they go next.
Spirit Detroit To Fort Lauderdale
Spirit Airlines is adding new flights from two of its newest cities, St. Louis, MO (STL) and Louisville, Kentucky (SDF). The two cities will add Fort Myers, Florida (RSW), and Tampa, Florida (TPA.) All destinations for the new routes are sunny destinations for both.
Spirit Airlines Fleet Gets ‘fitter’ With First A321neo
In the case of St. Louis, the Spirit will more than double its footprint in St. Louis from five daily flights to nine, but what makes it more interesting is that in Louisville and St. Louis, these route expansions are coming in the day. in the inaugural service for both cities. This shows strong demand for current flights and confidence in the future. Here are the routes:
All flights from St. Louis runs daily although the most recent flights don’t launch until November, just in time for the annual migration of snowbirds south. Cancun is the first international destination from St. Louis for Spirit Airlines.
Daily non-stop flights to Cancun would not be so surprising if they only run on holidays, American Airlines runs a seasonal one on Saturdays from Pittsburgh, United Airlines does the same from Cleveland. Since it is daily and not listed as seasonal, the addition is raising eyebrows and should be a good sign for flyers from Lambert Field.
Louisville has added some long-distance legs to the mix, and more of Florida is showing an insatiable need for sunshine conditions.
Lawyers Suing Jetblue Say The Airline Could Raise Fares On Some Routes After Buying Spirit Airlines
This expansion reminds me of Ryan Air and Southwest. When any carrier enters a new city, they don’t just fly to their hubs, they almost turn those cities into a “concentration city” (although Ryan Air calls them all hub or base – the 19th largest base flies non-stop to 48 destinations.) For Spirit’s side, Fort Lauderdale is an important hub, Las Vegas, LAX, and Orlando also receive many flights, but the carrier’s original hub, Detroit (DTW), does not get a flight from either city.
Other carriers have restructured their route networks to meet domestic demand as international has dried up almost entirely. In these cases, we often see recreational routes from traditional business cities. However, will the Spirit bring back airports like St. Louis to more nonstop destinations as it once did decades ago before deregulation?
St. Louis, in particular, went from a huge international hub 20 years ago with TWA to almost empty. American kept many routes and crew bases in the first few years of its acquisition of TWA but eventually folded almost all routes. The Southwest made a push but backed off in its broad approach. Now Spirit saw strong demand and immediately added more non-stops, something the former hub often desired.
The real question is whether the Spirit will go the pure business routes like New York, Seattle, San Francisco, or Boston. They did not back down from the competition. Unlike Allegiant which uses a different tactic than Ryan Air: fly from anywhere to somewhere (Grand Island, Nebraska to Las Vegas) or anywhere to anywhere (Pittsburgh to Punta Gorda, Florida) – Spirit flies to major airports such as Houston Intercontinental (IAH ) over Houston Hobby (HOU.) Spirit has enjoyed success flying directly against the Big 3, choosing LAX in this example Burbank, Orange County, or Long Beach.
Spirit Airlines To Add 7 New Routes
As someone who grew up in the midwest, I’m really excited to see Spirit stretch their legs outside of cities with significant non-stop service. They added Kansas City recently, and I’m always rooting for cities like Omaha because expansions like this turn occasional travelers into frequent travelers. Louisville is bigger than Omaha, sure, but doesn’t benefit from the kind of direct service from other carriers that it should. This is a step in that direction.
I also have family and friends flying these routes that now have so many connections (sometimes flying Fort Myers to Denver t0 St. Louis) that it’s annoying. They will be happy to shorten the almost cross-country trip in just a few hours.
Spirit’s destinations are increasing and the routes connecting them to the cities they serve are increasing. I’m excited to see that this isn’t purely seasonal traffic. Given the history of St. Louis, I am delighted that travelers are already voting with their wallets in these markets, giving confidence to the overall travel community and Spirit as it continues to grow its list of destinations.
What do you think? Will you be flying one of these routes? Will other carriers decide to compete directly?

Sometime in July, nonstop flights from Detroit to Austin, Boston, Baltimore-Washington, Denver, Houston, New Orleans, Oakland, Philadelphia and San Diego will resume, according to Spirit officials.
Like many airlines, Spirit has begun pulling routes as fewer passengers are willing to travel because of stay-at-home orders and fears of contracting the coronavirus at mass transit hubs.
JetBlue announced in May that, with the approval of the U.S. Department of Transportation, it would not fly into or out of Detroit Metro Airport until October.
The US Department of Transportation in late May also granted requests from Delta Airlines to suspend flights to and from Flint Bishop Airport, and from United Airlines to stop service to Kalamazoo and Lansing.
Spirit Airlines Announces Additional Pilot & Flight Attendant Crew Bases In Miami & Atlanta
Spirit’s announcement comes as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last week lifted the state’s stay-at-home order and gradually allowed previously closed industries to reopen with reduced capacities across the state.
As of Sunday, June 7, Michigan health officials said the state had a total of 58,870 reported cases of COVID-19 and 5,656 deaths.
Airports across the country are feeling the financial pressure of fewer passengers coming through their doors. Some airport managers and analysts say a full recovery will likely take years, not months.
