CityCenter, which contains 18 million square feet of construction and cost more than $5 billion, is the largest privately funded development in the United States. The entire project will feature a mix of hotels, fully-owned condominiums, retail, and office space in an effort to create a new downtown district in the heart of Las Vegas. MGM / Mirage has chosen a list of world architects including Cesar Pelli & Associates, Helmut Jahn, Daniel Libeskind, Foster and Associates, Kohn Pederson Fox, and others to create a new type of architecture in the city.
The Condo Hotel consists of a crescent-shaped tower that features the focal point of CityCenter, Harmon Circle, and its surrounding towers. The building’s plan, which consists of three alternating arcs, extends the perimeter of the residential building and provides excellent views of the Las Vegas Strip and its surroundings. As the tower rises, two outer planes emit a thin, beautiful display,
A monolithic tower that serves as a contrast to the typical Las Vegas hotel complex. The Curtainwall will be mainly glass that gives the typical look of a modern tower, simple, and transparent. At the base of the tower are various public amenities of the hotel such as restaurants, shops, and a fitness center. A swimming pool and deck floats above the lobby overlooking Harmon Circle, bringing activity to the Circle and a unique vantage point for visitors. The design also includes a tram system connecting CityCenter with Bellagio, Monte Carlo and future developments, which could extend to the nearby airport.

The Vdara Condo Hotel responds to the theme of Harmon Circle and the adjacent CityCenter hotel and casino with a curved building plan that includes three parallel, offset arcs. Rising to different heights, these alternating arcs give the impression of three volumes of slender building that slide into each other, an effect reinforced by the circular passages recessed between them.

To further distinguish the mass of the building, the cladding shows a pattern with horizontal lines in two shades: the soft white in the two outer arcs is different and the darkest black in the longest, central volume of the building. These spandrels are acid-stained glass with black or white fritting applied to the back side alternating with wide bands of reflective, low-E glazing, which extend slightly to turn the height of the building.
The 1,543 apartment units are wider than most hotel buildings, to accommodate longer stays and maximize the front view along the curtain wall. An additional advantage of the offset, the three arc floor plan is to create six corner housing units per floor, rather than four, with wide views and such a high rental command of the areas.
From the curved porte-cochere that goes beyond the drive and the valet drop off area, guests enter the grand lobby, a landmark, 18-foot-high space based on a raised lounge and a bar with outdoor seating. The pool deck, located on the roof of the building’s platform, brings life and activity to Harmon Circle and offers a superior view of the Circle and the entire City Center.
CityCenter is an unprecedented urban metropolis that will open in late 2009 on 76 acres between Bellagio and Monte Carlo on the Las Vegas Strip. CityCenter is a design collaboration between MGM MIRAGE and eight internationally recognized architectural firms including Pelli Clarke Pelli, Kohn Pederson Fox, Helmut Jahn, RV Architecture LLC led by Rafael Viñoly, Foster + Partners, Studio Daniel Libeskind2, Rockwell Group and Gensler. Charting a new course for responsible growth in Las Vegas, MGM MIRAGE follows the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for CityCenter. As planned, the 18-million-square foot, multi-use project will be one of the city’s largest environmentally sustainable projects.

The resort, entertainment and retail center CityCenter, developed by MGM Mirage, combines contemporary architecture and urban architecture with a high-density, mixed-use program to redefine Las Vegas. Rafael Viñoly Architects designed the Vdara Hotel and Spa, a luxury residential building in the City building. The 148, 800-square-meter (1.6 million-square-foot), 57-story Vdara is distinguished by its small profile and curvature, responding to the Harmon Circle and the integrated arcs of the hotel. – ARIA complex located across the shared circular drive. . Three parallel arcs, rising to different heights comprise the crescent-shape skyscraper.
The volumes of the building are distinguished by the colors of their striped areas, and are also subtly defined between them. A vertical wall with curtain lines frames a view of Las Vegas and the desert beyond. Alternating bands of reflective and light-diffusing vision glass, black and white acid-etched spandrel glass are placed in different planes to achieve a glossy texture on the façade. Modern, simple, and devoid of graphics or embellishments, Vdara represents a distinct contrast to the themed buildings of the Las Vegas Strip.
Vdara’s 1,495 suites are spacious and shallow compared to most hotel rooms and suites, maximizing views and daylight. An additional advantage of the three-story arc floor plan is the design of six corner rooms compared to the lower corner rooms common in conventional buildings.

The focal point is Bar Vdara, a lounge and bar with outdoor covered seating leading to the restaurant, Silk Road. The Sky Pool and Lounge, a south-facing pool area, allows for extended sun exposure, and offers spa cabanas and private plunge pools.
In keeping with the sustainable focus of the overall CityCenter development, the Vdara Hotel and Spa was designed to meet and achieve LEED Gold.
