Step By Step Guide On How To Write A Love Letter

When choosing a birthday card for your baby or child, choose one that has enough space to write a love letter inside. Start with Dear ______, how are you two (or whatever age they are)? Tell the child about the toys they enjoy, what they are good at, a fun day you shared, and what you like about them. These cards with love letters will be treasured memories for the child and parents to look back on year after year.

I have four precious children. Before they were born I bought them each a little book and started writing them love letters. The first letter I wrote was while they were pregnant, in which I shared my hopes for them, told them about the family they would be born into, and told them about family genealogy. Now I write letters about them every six months, describing how they are, how they grow and how they spend their days. How valuable will those letters be over time, and because they are in a book, the letters will not be lost.

Buy a journal and explain to your child that this will be a book of shared love letters. Start by writing a simple love letter, like Dear ________, I loved baking cookies with you today! See you tomorrow…sleep tight. I love you mom. Tell your child that every night at bedtime (or whatever method works for you), you can each write a love letter in the journal. This shared writing can start even at a young age, when it can help early reading and writing skills, not to mention the love stories it will inspire!

Write love letters to your child to “Pregnant When.” Label each envelope, place it in a box, and have your child decide where the box is kept. Some ideas can open up when:

P.S. Be sure to check out Laura Sassi’s blog the week of February 7th for a free handmade love letter! He would laugh if you ever told him this was one of his gifts…’cuz I have…. And he does! I guess it doesn’t matter if he knows it’s a gift, as long as he knows what it means to me.

In fact, to me that is more expensive than anything he can buy from me at the store. It lasts longer, it means more, and it reminds me not only of how lucky I am to be married.

Love letters aren’t just for Valentine’s Day. They are the best gift of the whole year. Here’s why (and how) you should write love letters to everyone in your life.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, now seems like the perfect time to talk about one of my favorite forms of writing: the classic love letter.

First, I’d like to clear up my feelings about Valentine’s Day. My husband and I don’t really do Valentine’s Day, but only because it feels like work. We do a lot of romantic things for the rest of the year. We’ve been together for almost ten years, so this seemed like a good year to go the extra mile!

Along the same lines, love is a different human emotion. It’s not limited to romantic love (which, let’s face it, can be confusing and sad). The kinds of love I like are quiet and unassuming: the neighbor who brings soup, the kid you tuck into bed at night, your friend who’s still your friend (even after you voted him out). That’s the love I want to celebrate!

You can send a love letter to the many lovers in your life: parents, children, best friends, siblings, grandparents. So, let’s write!

I am sending quite a few love letters this year, so here is a video of my process. I had the opportunity to embarrass my husband and write him an open love letter. And Ima-puttin’ on the internet! Don’t feel bad for him; he knew what he was getting into when he married me.

The good news is love letters don’t call for a huge supply. Write on printer paper, fine stationery, or gum wrappers. It doesn’t matter. I have a love letter in a “salvage” box that is actually on a gum wrapper. It is beautiful.

But I wanted to have fun with these. I just stocked up on paper materials (in preparation for InCoWriMo, for International Communication Month in February). There’s no excuse for playing with pen and paper, right?

One of the best parts about expressing yourself on paper is that you can rearrange and refine the words until they are just the way you want them. The first (or 2nd or 3rd) draft is yours alone. Write the first copy safely knowing that no one will ever see it.

Start with a pencil or scratch paper. So let your paper rest. Take a break, grab a coffee, eat a snack, stretch, and come back to proofread your paper.

When you find the right words, put a line you like. I used a blue Gelly Roll pen and coordinated the envelope I decorated.

Instructions For Writing A Love Letter: Taking The Love Letter Oath

I know, writing is hard. Love letters can be more difficult. It’s best to ask for help. Pull an excerpt from a famous love letter and quote them. Let an experienced writer do your homework for you! Sometimes we feel “fake” if we try to write something in a formal, romantic way.

A quote, on the other hand, means you took the time to find the exact words in someone else’s hand. The emotion is there without feeling forced or contrived.

My selection was this beautiful passage from one of Winston Churchill’s love letters to his wife, Clementine. I copied it cursive using Metropolitan Pilot to contrast it with the rest of my paper.

Sometimes simple is better. “Simple” is my word of the year, so I wanted to explore a simple way to show love every day. I cut out some glitter stickers on the hearts and put sweet and silly phrases on them.
