The city was incorporated on May 1, 1946. It is the most populous city in the state of Nevada, and the most populous city in the United States.
Native Americans were the first to settle in the area. The Paiute Indians inhabited the area around 700AD.
During the 1860s, Conrad Kiel established a farm at today’s intersection of Carey Street and Losee Road in what would become North Las Vegas.
In 1917, Thomas L. Williams of Eureka, Utah visited the Las Vegas Valley, after Las Vegas, the Las Vegas Indian Colony, and Ard were the only ties to the valley.

He didn’t like Las Vegas, either because of its brutality (he was a Christian, or at least went to church), or because of Las Vegas’ attempts to control its citizens. However, he was pleased with the amount of water in that valley and the pots for farming.
Two years later in 1919, he moved with his family (his wife and three sons) to 160 acres of land a mile from Las Vegas. That year, he founded his town, developing the town by building a house for himself and his family, sinking a well, arranging roads, adding electric lines, and making irrigation canals.
Williams believed that churches and church people should rule the new town, so churches were encouraged to buy land in the town.
In 1919, the Volstead Act was passed by the union, which prohibited the sale, possession, and consumption of alcohol. Since there was no local law against alcohol, and because of the system of tunnels that would connect the speakeasies of the city underground, the city attracted bootleggers from Las Vegas, although Williams did not know this. This gave his town the nickname “Old Town”.

In 1924, William built his second house which was the first business in town. It was called the Oasis Auto Court, and it had a grocery store, a campground, a post office, lodging, and a telephone. At the time, it was the only phone in town.
Between 1928 and 1935, a group of workers from the Hoover Dam settled in Williamstown, as Las Vegas did not tolerate them.
In 1932, a town board was created. That same year, the town’s first grammar school, Washington School, opened.
A proper name had not yet been decided for the town, and Williams did not want it to be named after him, which led the town board to vote for either “North Las Vegas” or “Vegas Verdes” (which means “Green Meadows” in Spanish. ). “Vegas Verdes” won, and that became the name of the town for a few months. George Hans, a member of the town board who voted for the name “North Las Vegas”, noticed that at the town board meeting, the two members who voted for the name “Vegas Verdes” were incredulous. The name vote came again, and “North Las Vegas” won.

On May 13, 1964, First Lieutenant Raynor Lee Hebert, a pilot from Port Arthur, Texas, took off from Nellis Air Force Base around 2:00 PM in an F-105 fighter jet. He radioed his flight commander that he couldn’t retract the nose gear, so he couldn’t take off. He was too high to bail, but too low if he did, he would have hit Lincoln Elemtary School, which was in session with 800 students. He kept the nose of the plane long enough to graduate from school, and eventually hit nine houses on Lwood Ave. The accident killed Hebert and four people. Hebert Memorial Park was created by the City of North Las Vegas and a plaque at the crash site commemorates Hebert.
In the early 1960s, North Las Vegas was booming. In the 1970s North Las Vegas saw the growth of poverty, overcrowding and crime. In 1988, former mayor James Seastrand said in an interview,
There are those of us who live here and care about this city and don’t want to leave it — even though we could afford it.—James Seastrand[18]
In the 1990s, North Las Vegas seized about 60 kilometers of empty desert surrounding the city, reportedly for “high-rise” housing.
